The Great Adventures of the Yamaha Viking VI 05-Dec-21
Group:
Yamaha Viking VI: Gary, Gnettie and Sherwood
Polaris 2 Seater: Mike and Debby Gruenthaner
An awesome trip today. Gnettie drove the Yamaha all day. We traveled south out of Eagle Roost, then West to the original Cullings well which turned out to be a 200 foot deep dry hole.
Then we ventured south to where the jeep trail ended. Then we went north to highway 60, then ran west along the north bank until we came to the cutoff to the second, (successful) Cullings Well turnoff.
We then turned north and lunched again at the cemetary. From the cemetary we went northeast to the Loma Linda ranch road and then back to Eagle Roost. A full 53.4 mile circle!
Note: Due to a lot of trail vandalism we are keeping the location of the well a secret.
This is what it looks like today. Imagine digging this 200 foot hole by hand. Today it would be totally illegal for safety reasons. Men were braver and a lot hardier 150 years ago.
The area is thick in white over burden dug taken out of the hole.
Here is a video of our trip to the well. We needed to go way off road to reach it. With more washouts every year it is getting harder and harder to reach it. Note: Where possible I try to avoid going over the other ATV's tracks so a rain will destroy any evidence of us going there. As you can see on the video all the tracks are fresh.
From the well we went north to Highway 60. Then we took a cool telephone pole road to the Culling's Well cutoff and ended up at the Culling's Cemetary for lunch. Here is our trip, edited for brevity.
